The term cut and sew is a manufacturing process used in the making of custom garments within the fashion industry. [1] A whole piece of any type of fabric is first placed on a cutting table or run through a cutting machine. A garment piece or shape is then cut out, which is next sent for sewing through the garment assembly.
History of sewing patterns. A sewing pattern is the template from which the parts of a garment are traced onto woven or knitted fabrics before being cut out and assembled. Patterns are usually made of paper, and are sometimes made of sturdier materials like paperboard or cardboard if they need to be more robust to withstand repeated use.
A pressing cloth may be used to protect the fabric from damage. Sewing machines are now made for a broad range of specialised sewing purposes, such as quilting machines, heavy-duty machines for sewing thicker fabrics (such as leather), computerized machines for embroidery, and sergers for finishing raw edges of fabric.
1842 – John Greenough patents the first sewing machine in the United States. 1844 – John Smith of Salford granted a patent for a shuttleless rapier loom. [citation needed] 1846 – John Livesey adapts John Heathcoat's bobbinet machine into the curtain machine. 1847 – William Mason Patents his "Mason self-acting" Mule.
