St. Joseph was first platted in 1829, and the first lighthouse at the site, located on the shore, was built in 1832. Construction began on harbor piers in 1836, and by 1848 a beacon light had been established on the pier. The onshore lighthouse was replaced in 1859, and a new pierhead beacon was constructed on the south pier in 1870.

Our Lady of the Lake Catholic High School was formed by the merger of St. John and St. Joseph Catholic Schools in 1969. Since then, the high school has been part of a PS-12 school system serving Southwestern Michigan in the Catholic education tradition.
In 1909, the diocese purchased a building in Grand Rapids and opened Saint Joseph's Minor Seminary, educating high school- and college-age boys. The seminary proved a success, and a new four-story brick building was constructed in 1910 to house the program. The building was enlarged in 1913, but still proved too small to house all students.
