zellers .thebay .com. Zellers was a Canadian discount store chain founded by Walter P. Zeller in 1931. It was acquired by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in 1978, and after a series of acquisitions and expansions, peaked with 350 locations in 1999. [2]
Zellers was still owned by HBC as two remaining stores following the sale of its lease portfolio to Target Canada in 2011. By September 2019, the re-purposed Toronto and Ottawa Zellers locations were still operating as discount department stores.
Zellers locations to be converted were typically closed for six to nine months for significant remodelling and renovation. Target announced plans to hire 27,000 new employees to support its expansion into Canada, including 5,000 in Quebec, and that its food and grocery items in Canada would be supplied by Sobeys.
Zellers was once a major chain in Canada, ran into hard times and was liquidated, but the brand could be viable for a comeback.

Walter Philip Zeller (October 21, 1890 – August 25, 1957) was a Canadian businessman and founder of discount retail chain Zellers . Zeller was born October 21, 1890, near the city of Kitchener, Ontario (then Berlin). [1] His great-grandfather settled in Breslau, Ontario after arriving from Germany.
The Zellers was closed in 2012 when the Zellers leasehold was purchased by Target; the location was closed for about a year before reopening as Target on 19 March 2013. In early 2015, all Target stores across Canada closed.
