A telephone number serves as an address for switching telephone calls using a system of destination code routing. [1] Telephone numbers are entered or dialed by a calling party on the originating telephone set, which transmits the sequence of digits in the process of signaling to a telephone exchange.
Before 1993, telephone numbers would consist either of a two-digit area code and a six-digit subscriber number in cities and large towns, for example, (02) 412702 in Oslo, [1] or a three-digit area code and a five-digit subscriber number in smaller towns, for example, (034) 83000 in Larvik.
Five-digit numbers starting with 118 are information numbers.
