57456. Anatomical terms of bone. [ edit on Wikidata] Illustration of upper respiratory system. In anatomy, a nasal concha ( / ˈkɒnkə /; pl.: conchae; / ˈkɒnkiː /; Latin for 'shell'), also called a nasal turbinate or turbinal, [1] [2] is a long, narrow, curled shelf of bone that protrudes into the breathing passage of the nose in humans ...
The nasal cavity is divided in two by the vertical nasal septum. On the side of each nasal cavity are three horizontal outgrowths called nasal conchae (singular "concha") or turbinates. These turbinates disrupt the airflow, directing air toward the olfactory epithelium on the surface of the turbinates and the septum.
The inferior nasal concha ( inferior turbinated bone or inferior turbinal/turbinate) is one of the three paired nasal conchae in the nose. It extends horizontally along the lateral wall of the nasal cavity and consists of a lamina of spongy bone, curled upon itself like a scroll, ( turbinate meaning inverted cone). [1]
Concha bullosa. A concha bullosa is a pneumatized (air-filled) cavity within a nasal concha, also known as a turbinate. [1] Bullosa refers to the air-filled cavity within the turbinate. [1] It is a normal anatomic variant seen in up to half the population.
According to Heetderks, the cycle is the result of alternating congestion and decongestion of the nasal conchae or turbinates, predominantly the inferior turbinates, which are by far the largest of the turbinates in each nasal fossa. Turbinates consist of bony projections covered by erectile tissue, much like the tissues of the penis and clitoris.
Middle nasal concha. Ethmoid bone from behind. Lateral wall of nasal cavity, showing ethmoid bone in position. (Middle nasal concha is at bottom of pink region.) The medial surface of the labyrinth of ethmoid consists of a thin lamella, which descends from the under surface of the cribriform plate, and ends below in a free, convoluted margin ...
Chronic atrophic rhinitis, or simply atrophic rhinitis, is a chronic inflammation of the nose characterised by atrophy of nasal mucosa, including the glands, turbinate bones and the nerve elements supplying the nose. Chronic atrophic rhinitis may be primary and secondary.
Nasal surgery is a medical procedure designed to treat various conditions that cause nasal blockages in the upper respiratory tract, for example nasal polyps, inferior turbinate hypertrophy, and chronic rhinosinusitis. [1]
A turbinectomy or turbinoplasty (preserving the mucosal layer) is a surgical procedure, that removes tissue, and sometimes bone, of the turbinates in the nasal passage, particularly the inferior nasal concha. The procedure is usually performed to relieve nasal obstructions. [1]
Nasal meatus. In anatomy, the term nasal meatus [1] can refer to any of the three meatuses (passages) through the skull ' s nasal cavity: the superior meatus ( meatus nasi superior ), middle meatus ( meatus nasi medius ), and inferior meatus ( meatus nasi inferior ). The nasal meatuses are the spaces beneath each of the corresponding nasal conchae.
