The St. Mary's burn unit was opened in 1975. The first open heart surgery in the region was performed at St. Mary's on Sept. 10, 1984. On November 1, 1999, the Daughters of Charity National Health System merged with the Sisters of Saint Joseph to form Ascension Health. The Saginaw hospital was renamed as Ascension Saint Mary's.
Spectrum Health Lakeland is a nonprofit community-owned health system in southwest Michigan. [3] The health system comprises three hospitals, an outpatient surgery center, a regional cancer center, rehabilitation centers, two long-term care residences, home care and hospice services, and 34 affiliate physician practice locations.
The hospital received accreditation by the American College of Surgeons in 1924, becoming the first Copper Country hospital to become accredited, and one of just 14 in the state at the time. In 1949, the hospital began building a new building on Michigan Avenue. In 1972 St. Joseph's Hospital became St. Joseph's Community Hospital.
It was the first hospital in Southeast Michigan to open in 20 years. The hospital was established due to population growth in western Oakland County. A previous branch campus of the main Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan, with 300,000 square feet (28,000 m 2) of space was to be expanded to 700,000 square feet (65,000 m 2).
