Though rarely captured, they are found in cold, deep tropical to subtropical waters worldwide. The common name of these fish is related to their bizarre, tubular eyes.

[4] Like other members of the genus Hoplias this species has a cylindrical body shape with a large mouth equipped with prominent teeth.
