Oxford is in central Lafayette County in northern Mississippi, about 75 miles (121 km) south-southeast of Memphis, Tennessee. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 26.7 square miles (69.2 km 2), of which 26.6 square miles (68.9 km 2) are land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km 2), or 0.35%, is water. The grave site of Mississippi pioneer, Lt. Col. John Bond, Jr., is located approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of McHenry. Due to its location just north of the Harrison County line, numerous modern residential subdivisions and some commercial uses have been developed in the McHenry area, particularly in the post- Katrina period.

The chamber was founded in March 1838 by two businessmen, Col. Nathaniel Anderson and Louis Trezevant. The city of Memphis was new at the time and they formed the organization to function as a chamber of commerce. [2] In late 2022 the chamber was led by President & CEO Ted Townsend. [3]
