50 is wrong. 40 is how Munsell handles the colors in actual practice. While it is an analog system, the minor hue subdivisions are at 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10. Those "round numbers" (heh) are the 40 plates in the Munsell Book of Color, and sheets of those hues are in stock at Munsell/XRite (I recently ordered 2.5BG 7/4).
