A new fish cleaning station opened at Lampe Marina, on the south end of the parking lot, in Erie on May 1, 2024. The station will be open 24 hours a day, May 1 through Oct. 31, 2024.
A cleaning station is a location where aquatic life congregate to be cleaned by smaller beings. Such stations exist in both freshwater and marine environments, and are used by animals including fish, sea turtles and hippos.
The stations, funded at about $500,000 each, are located at Mazurik Access Area near Marblehead, Huron River Boat Access and Avon Lake Boat Launch.
With 1,100 linear feet of space, the pier also provides covered platforms for protection from the elements, a fish-cleaning table, and some of the best angling in the state.
It also provides flush toilets, showers, playgrounds, boat ramp, drinking water, trails through the woods, a public beach, and a fish cleaning station. These campsites range from $18 to $50 depending on the amenities.
Remoras are tropical open-ocean dwellers, but are occasionally found in temperate or coastal waters if they have attached to large fish that have wandered into these areas.
