Ironically, however, within a few years the Post Office found that stamps in the old denominations were needed after all, and so, added a 10¢ value to the series in 1855, followed by a 5¢ stamp the following year.
In past years, non-denominated postage issued by the United States differed from the issues of other countries, in that the stamps retained their original monetary value. Some stamps, such as those intended for local or bulk mail rate, were issued without denomination.
The U.S. Postal Service is raising postage costs for the second time this year. On July 9, the price of a first-class stamp will rise to 66 cents from 63 cents.
The forever stamp rate has been at 55 cents since Jan. 27, 2019. The price will hold steady even as other postage rates increase by up to 1.8% in late January 2021.
