James McParland [Note 1] ( né McParlan; [Note 2] 22 March 1844 [3] – 18 May 1919) was an American private detective and Pinkerton agent. McParland arrived in New York in 1867. He worked as a laborer, policeman and then in Chicago as a liquor store owner [4] [5] until the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed his business.
