The incumbent Liberal Party of Australia led by Prime Minister of Australia Robert Menzies with coalition partner the Country Party led by Arthur Fadden defeated the Australian Labor Party led by Ben Chifley.
2 The Liberal member for Corio, Hubert Opperman, resigned on 10 June 1967 to accept an appointment as Australia's first High Commissioner to Malta; Labor candidate Gordon Scholes won the resulting by-election on 22 July 1967.
