Penney OpCo LLC, doing business as JCPenney and often abbreviated JCP, is an American department store chain that operates 663 stores across 49 U.S. states and Puerto Rico.
In August 2020, JCPenney announced that it would close over 150 stores, including the Century III Mall location. It closed on October 26, the last tenant of the mall. In March 2023, home improvement chain Menards reportedly declined on its offer to purchase Century III Mall.
Upon its opening, the mall had 5 anchor stores: Sears, JCPenney, the May Company, Higbee's, and Horne's. JCPenney opened in March 1976, 5 months before the rest of the mall opened. Sears did not open until February 1977. Halle's had plans to open a store at the mall across from Higbees, but plans were cancelled when Halle's went bankrupted in 1982.
