The station in 1962. It was built after the Barry Railway Company was incorporated by Act of Parliament on 14 August 1884, for the construction of the Barry Docks.. The company also ran Paddle Steamers from Barry Pier 2.5 miles (4.0 km) rail miles beyond, to places across the Bristol Channel, but eventually sold out to the Bristol company of P & A Campbell.
The MR had no access over the GWR routes into either Bristol Harbour or Avonmouth docks, and so drew up options to either acquire the Avonmouth Docks Co., or build new docks on the opposite bank at Portbury. The result was that in 1884, the Bristol Corporation bought Avonmouth Docks and the BPRP to control port facilities in the area. [1] [7]
Its three-letter station code is TIL. The station was opened on 15 June 1885 with the name Tilbury Dock by the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway. It was renamed Tilbury Town on 3 August 1934. It is on a link known as the Tilbury Loop, which joins the main line at the London end at Barking and at the country end at Pitsea.
The station was opened as Jarrow Dock on 1 August 1856, by the Stanhope and Tyne Railway. It was later resited and renamed Tyne Dock on 1 January 1861.
