The MNREAD acuity chart or Minnesota low vision reading chart is a text based chart used to measure near visual acuity in people with normal or low vision. [1] It can also be used to measure maximum reading speed, critical print size and the reading accessibility index of a person. [2] Digital and printed types of charts are available.
In the test, the person looks with each eye separately at the small dot in the center of the grid. Patients with macular disease may see wavy lines or some lines may be missing. Amsler grids are supplied by ophthalmologists, optometrists or from web sites, and may be used to test one's vision at home. The original Amsler grid was black and white.
Patient is asked to sit in front of an illuminated vision chart, at 6 meter distance. Initial measurement of best corrected visual acuity should be done. Locate fovea using ophthalmoscope. Ask the patient to look at the bright light of the ophthalmoscope for 10 seconds. Time taken to read any three letters of the pre-test visual acuity is noted.
