Many of the small white flowers, in various stages of development, may be seen among the larger bracts. Bougainvillea ( / ˌbuːɡənˈvɪli.ə / BOO-gən-VIL-ee-ə, US also / ˌboʊ -/ BOH-) is a genus of thorny ornamental vines, bushes, and trees belonging to the four o' clock family, Nyctaginaceae. They are native to Brazil, Peru, and Argentina.
The flowers are produced in early spring at the same time as the leaves emerge, on dangling racemes 3–7 cm (1–3 in) long of 5–30 flowers; each flower is 5–10 millimetres (1 ⁄ 4 – 3 ⁄ 8 in) in diameter, with five red or pink petals. The fruit is a dark purple oval berry about 1 cm (3 ⁄ 8 in) long, edible but with an insipid taste.
