Sterling is the world's oldest currency in continuous use since its inception. In 2022, it was the fourth-most-traded currency in the foreign exchange market, after the United States dollar, the euro, and the Japanese yen.
It is the second-highest denomination of banknote currently issued by the Bank of England. The current polymer notes, first issued on 5 June 2024, bears the image of King Charles III on the obverse.
These terms and divisions of currency were in use from the 7th century. The value of some coins fluctuated, particularly in the reigns of James I and Charles I. The value of a guinea fluctuated between 20 and 30 shillings before being fixed at 21 shillings in December 1717.
