The St. Joseph Trail ran between the Benton Harbor–St. Joseph area and Detroit by way of what is now Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Jackson, and Ann Arbor.

Howell was first settled in 1833-34. The village was platted in 1835, and in 1836 became the county seat for Livingston County. The stretch along Grand River Avenue that is encompassed by this historic district has been the center of commercial activity since the 1830s. The buildings that are currently located in the district date from the 1870s.

Business Loop Interstate 94 ( BL I-94) is a 5.7-mile-long (9.2 km) state trunkline highway serving as a business loop from the I-94 freeway through downtown Marshall. The highway begins at a cloverleaf interchange in Marshall Township between I-94 and I-69, exit 108 on the former and exit 38 for the latter.
The St. Joseph Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of four counties - three in northwest Missouri ( Andrew, Buchanan, and DeKalb) and one in northeast Kansas ( Doniphan) - anchored by the city of St. Joseph, comprising a total area of 1,673.93 square miles (4,335.5 km 2 ).

The State Trunkline Highway System was created on May 13, 1913, by an act of the Michigan Legislature ; at the time, Division 6 corresponded to the rough path of today's I-94. [14]
