The St. Joseph County Courthouse is a government building located at 125 West Main Street in Centreville, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. History. Centreville was first established as the county seat of St. Joseph County in 1831. The first county offices were located in a leased house.
Fort Saint Joseph was a fort established on land granted to the Jesuits by King Louis XIV; it was located on what is now the south side of the present-day town of Niles, Michigan. St. Joseph's Orphanage [edit] St. Joseph's opened in 1854 in a former tavern. Staffed by the Sisters of Providence from Montreal, it initially housed fifty-eight orphans. St. Joseph's closed in 1974. In the 1990s, the Diocese of Burlington was sued by former residents of St. Joseph's Orphanage, claiming abuse by the staff.
