On October 20, 2003, the Atlanta City Council voted to rename Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport to honor former mayor Maynard Jackson, who died June 23, 2003. The hospital officially opened in 1983 as an independent children's hospital that was physically located within Good Samaritan Hospital.
