List of United Kingdom dialing codes. In the United Kingdom, telephone numbers are administered by the Office of Communications ( Ofcom ). For this purpose, Ofcom established a telephone numbering plan, known as the National Telephone Numbering Plan, which is the system for assigning telephone numbers to subscriber stations.
The longest telephone numbers in use until now had been 9 digits long (not including the 0 trunk code), e.g. 051 234 5678, 0303 456789, 03873 56789, 0800 445566. The long term plan is for migration to 10 digit numbering in the UK and in 1991 this started with new 0800 numbers being allocated with 10 digits.
All area codes begin with the number 0. The operator code for fixed (landline) numbers is "y". "zzzzzz" denotes the primary telephone number, which has six digits. Mobile numbers start with the mobile operator code (which begins from 07X, followed by seven digits for the main telephone number).
