Microsoft offers an optional free antivirus utility called Microsoft Security Essentials, a Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool that is updated as part of the regular Windows update regime, and an older optional anti-malware (malware removal) tool Windows Defender that has been upgraded to an antivirus product in Windows 8.

Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool ( MSRT) is a freeware second-opinion malware scanner that Microsoft 's Windows Update downloads and runs on Windows computers each month, independent of the install antivirus software. First released on January 13, 2005, [2] MSRT does not offer real-time protection.
Microsoft Anti-Virus for Windows (MWAV), included as part of the package, was a front end that allowed MSAV to run properly on Windows 3.1x. In 2009, Microsoft launched an in-house antivirus solution named Microsoft Security Essentials , which later was phased out in favor of Microsoft Defender .
Microsoft Security Essentials detected 89 percent of the rootkit samples. That's good, but more than half of the recent antivirus products detected 100 percent. Microsoft Security Essentials' scores in my malware removal tests were barely average. Many other products, including free products, have shown much greater success.
