Sir John Charnley, CBE, FRS [1] (29 August 1911 – 5 August 1982) was an English orthopaedic surgeon.He pioneered the hip replacement operation, [4] which is now one of the most common operations both in the UK and elsewhere in the world, and created the "Wrightington centre for hip surgery".
During total hip replacement, the orthopaedic surgeon removes the patient's femoral head, as a necessary part of the process of inserting the artificial hip prosthesis. The femoral head is a roughly spherical area of bone, located at the proximal end of the femur, with a diameter of 45 mm to 56 mm in adult humans.
Revision is the replacement of a prosthesis. This means that a prosthesis previously implanted in the body is removed and replaced by a new prosthesis. Compared to the initial operation revisions are often more complex and more difficult, because every revision involves the loss of healthy bone substance.
A good candidate for total hip replacement (THR) must be at least 9–12 months old to be sure he has finished developing and weigh at least 30 pounds (14 kg). The hip implant for dogs is similar to its human counterpart, but it is much smaller. X-rays are used to determine the dimensions of an appropriately sized implant. [3]
