The Michigan Department of Natural Resources lists the park among thirteen state parks established in 1920 following creation of the Michigan State Parks Commission in 1919. [3] Land for the park was donated to the city of Harrison in 1900 by a lumber company, then transferred to the state in 1922. The state park was dedicated in 1927. [4]
P. H. Hoeft State Park is a public recreation area on the shores of Lake Huron, four miles (6.4 km) northwest of Rogers City on US 23 in Presque Isle County, Michigan. [4] The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Onaway State Park consists of a picnic area, a beach and day use area, and a campground. The campground area is divided into two sections. The lower campground was created in 1923, and campsite separation barriers (of logs, boulders, or concrete) were installed by CCC workers in the 1930s.
