Helianthus ( / ˌhiːliˈænθəs /) [3] is a genus comprising about 70 species of annual and perennial flowering plants in the daisy family Asteraceae commonly known as sunflowers. [4] [5] Except for three South American species, the species of Helianthus are native to North America and Central America.
It is valued in gardens and in floristry for its heart-shaped pink and white flowers, borne in spring. Other common names include lyre flower, heart flower, and lady-in-a-bath.
G. pulchella is a hardy plant, not picky about soil, though sandy and well-drained are best. It has a high drought tolerance and does best with a dry, hot climate in full sun. Its vibrantly colored flowers can be seen carpeting fields and the sides of highways for miles in the summer to late fall.
