St. Joseph's Orphanage. St. Joseph's opened in 1854 in a former tavern. Staffed by the Sisters of Providence from Montreal, it initially housed fifty-eight orphans. St. Joseph's closed in 1974. In the 1990s, the Diocese of Burlington was sued by former residents of St. Joseph's Orphanage, claiming abuse by the staff.
