Edward Hospital, 1955–1987. On October 1, 1955, Edward Sanatorium officially reopened its doors as Edward Hospital, an acute-care facility with 45 beds. The hospital's first patient was 23-month-old Frederich Maurer, Jr., who was brought in after he was kicked by a horse. Edward became a public, tax-supported entity in 1959.
