OfficeMax is an American office supplies retailer founded in 1988. As an independent chain, it was the third-largest office supply retailer in the United States. Following a 2013 merger, it is currently a brand and subsidiary of Office Depot. The first OfficeMax store, located in Mayfield Heights, Ohio.
M. Bruce Nelson is an American businessman and former CEO of Office Depot. He made a career in the office supply industry leading several companies including: Viking Office Products (later merged with Office Depot), BT Office Products USA, and Boise Cascade Office Products.
In 2014, in the wake of increasing competition from e-commerce market, Staples began to close some of its locations. In 2015, Staples announced its intent to acquire Office Depot and OfficeMax. However, the purchase was blocked under antitrust grounds due to the consolidation that would result.
In May 1998, Viking Office Products merged with Office Depot. The following year the company began to move online, launching an e-commerce site www.viking-direct.co.uk[4] and subsequently websites in other countries. For a short period, they also operated as a standalone European business.
He became the Chairman of Office Depot in 1987 and was the company's director and CEO from December 1987 to July 17, 2000. Fuente took the then fledgling company public in 1988 and increased its footprint from 173 stores in 1990 to over 1000 stores by 2000 when he relinquished his CEO title. [3]

The American counterpart acquired the Canadian company in 1994. The company later began converting locations in English-speaking markets to Staples. In 2008, Staples acquired Corporate Express.
