The team was established in 1989 as the Anchorage Aces. They were originally a semi-professional club in the Pacific Southwest Hockey League organized by Dennis Sorenson, as a senior men's ice hockey team to compete against the established Alaska Gold Kings in Fairbanks. The Aces played four unofficial games during the 1989–90 season.
The end result was that Alaska Anchorage could no longer support several of its programs and, despite once being the cornerstone of the athletic department, the expensive ice hockey team was scheduled for a swan song in 2021. Before a single game could be played, however, the COVID-19 pandemic made playing the season untenable.
The 2024–25 Alaska Anchorage Seawolves men's ice hockey season was the 44th season of play for the program and the 39th at the Division I level. The Seawolves represented the University of Alaska Anchorage, played their home games at the Avis Alaska Sports Complex and were coached by Matt Shasby in his 3rd season.

The 2019–20 Alaska Anchorage Seawolves men's ice hockey season was the 41st season of play for the program, the 36th at the Division I level and the 27th in the WCHA conference. The Seawolves represented the University of Alaska Anchorage and were coached by Matt Curley , in his 2nd season.
